Narrative Leadership

identifies personal stories

that they might be integrated

organically into teams,

synergistically into projects, and

authentically into the organizational culture.

Success emerges from narrative design that resonates with artistry.

Narrative leadership involves

spirit of values, beliefs, intuition, and dreams,

mind of thoughts, emotions, and perspectives,

bodyof play, work, words, and actions,

experience design aligned with your business plan,

and other components of PSI-BETA-BLOC-R8

that weave personal myth and metaphor into illumined reality.

Narrative Leadership Increases Viability and Effectiveness

Facts can inform,

Arguments can persuade, but

A well-crafted story reaches out to connect, captivate, and inspire.

What they say is true: A picture is worth a thousand words. That is because people are innately wired to understand the nature and meaning of human events through images, stories, and metaphor. What is true around the kitchen table and campfire holds around the coffee station and Boardroom as well.

Narrative was not vital to business operations historically because, in the previous industrial and information ages, business could focus on linear processes and logic alone. Facts, tasks, and metrics were sufficient for successful business. But, those days are gone. Most information processes routinely have been off-shored to locales where they can be conducted more efficiently.

Yes, stories are at the heart of human experience. Whether mindfully or not, we all develop stories from our experiences at work and play to give meaning our days. Leaders craft the story for their companies. Leaders who are mindful of the stories they craft, not only make their passion contagious, they inspire those characters around them become a vital part of the story and work toward the same end with excellence.

Leaders who tell compelling stories connect with, captivate, inspire others to a unified purpose and performance excellence. Compelling stories are those that are authentic (ring true) and grounded in reality.

Seven ways that narrative leadership can assist an organization:

1. Unifying vision and purpose

2. Imagining future possibilities

3. Creating personal influence

4. Maturing effective teams

5. Assessing and changing mindset/worldview/culture

6. Sharing knowledge & creating cultural lore

7. Transcending conflict

Successful leaders now recognize that business has entered an innovation age. Unlike the linear view associated with the industrial and information ages, the age of innovation is less direct and more elliptical. Like an orbiting planet, business leaders seeking to maintain a competitive edge, set a culture that values and encourages linear (logical) and spiral (holistic) progress simultaneously. They are adapting and aligning organizational structures, processes, communication, and culture to this spiral worldview. To put it another way, they place information into a narrative that embraces logic and perception. They maintain a systems vision that metaphorically integrates the heart and mind of the organization.

Why include narrative leadership as part of your standard business?
The narrative approach incorporates the basic tenets of cognitive psychology to create a multimedia experience that “speaks” with meaning to the organization. It incorporates the latest research to engage participants, readily tag an experience with relevance, give it meaning and, as a result, heighten ownership, loyalty, retention, and transfer of knowledge, information, and skills into daily practice.

Narrative leadership:

• Increases collaboration within and between teams

• Assumes greater clarity, relevance, and personal meaning with objectives and goals

• Aligns organizational vision and values with processes, practices, and workforce

• Leverages human potential and talents

• Increases workforce satisfaction

• Designs a holistic experience for a fully integrated culture

• Improves creativity and innovation

• Increases critical thinking

• Increases competence with global skills needed for today’s business success

• Increases satisfaction and loyalty with clients, patients, and students

• Achieves bottom line results by going to the root and focusing on the driving factors rather than the symptoms
