What is Organizational Health?

COACHING FOR ORGANIZATIONAL WELLNESS
Organizations are not neutral. In actuality, they are nothing like machines. Organizations are living, organic entities. They are composed of human beings, each with their own values, beliefs, thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and expectations. As such, living organizations are complex. They are multi-dimensional and dynamic. Like the human beings that compose them, they are constantly shifting toward growth or protection, one or the other, because growth and protection cannot occur simultaneously.

Managing a living organization is anything but easy. It requires more than a focus a metrics. It entails the nurturing of human potential - the actualized, the developing, and the unexplored. It involves creating a culture and daily experience that facilitates the flexibility, adaptation, and innovation needed for competitiveness in today’s global marketplace. The state of health of each individual interacts within the organization to create a collective state of health or dis-ease. Symptoms of organizational health include smiles, laughter, and vital energy in the work force. Health benefits the organization through satisfaction, loyalty, engagement, creativity, and productivity. Conversely, symptoms of dis-ease include poor morale, complaints, and sluggishness. Dis-ease costs the organization in disloyalty, absenteeism, infectious negativity, sabotage, and decreased productivity.

How do I know if my organization is a healthy, organic entity? There are many factors involved (see below), but here is a quick check: Look at your organizational chart. Does it look like the layout for a computer board? If so, your organization is operating on a “machine” model, not a “living” model. When operations have a machine model as a foundation, there is great energy loss in the form of human potential going to waste. When human potential is not actualized, your organization cannot enjoy the greatest performance possible. This loss translates into significant organizational cost.

Healthy organizations are strong organizations. One way our coaching is distinguished from that of our competitors is that we begin by identifying your leadership and organizational strengths. We assess what is already going well to assure that the positives are maintained and enhanced. Would you construct a multi-storied house on top of a weak, cracked foundation? Probably not. The same is true for your organizational structure. Only from a strong foundation can we confidently leverage your strengths and focus on potential areas for healthy growth that matches your unique vision and goals.
